All civil servants hired from this month will be on three year contracts.
Public Service Commission Chairman Rishi Ram said they have decided to take this step to ensure greater efficiency in the civil service as these contracts will be performance based.
Ram also said the automatic pay increments through the Cost of Living Adjustment for civil servants will definitely be a thing of the past now.
He said while the civil servants who are already in the public service will not be put on term contracts, their future in the service will depend on their performance.
The public sector unions are expected to comment later today.
