One person is dead and several injured after a tornado hit Auckland’s North Shore in the last hour.
Radio NZ reports that the Fire Service said the tornado has caused significant damage in Albany, particularly around the Mega Centre.
NZ Police said the weather pattern cut through an area of about 5 kilometres and eyewitnesses say the mall’s roof has collapsed and cars have overturned.
The Auckland Council said its Civil Defence Emergency Co ordination Centre has been activated.
An eyewitness Samantha Davey said she could see sheets of metal flying through the air near the mall and it was a terrifying experience.
She said all they could see was a big black cloud spinning above the mall and debris flying everywhere.
