NFA urges Fijians to play fireworks vigilantly this Diwali

As Diwali celebrations light up Fiji, the National Fire Authority reminds the public to exercise caution and responsibility when playing with fireworks.

NFA Chief Executive Officer, Puamau Sowane urges caution when using fireworks, adding they should be purchased only from licensed vendors to ensure quality and safety.

He advises members of the public to ensure children are always supervised and read safety instructions carefully, use fireworks in open areas away from homes, vehicles, and dry vegetation.

He adds that a bucket of water or sand should be kept nearby to extinguish any sparks or flames.

Meanwhile, Sowane encourages households to place diya and candles on stable, heat-resistant surfaces, away from curtains, fabrics, or paper decorations.

He adds that all open flames should be fully extinguished before leaving the home or going to sleep, and cooking appliances must never be left unattended.

Fijians are urged to immediately call 910 in any event of a fire or emergency.
