Mother charged with rape of her 3-year-old daughter denied bail

A mother who has been charged with the rape of her three year old daughter has been denied bail by the Suva Magistrates Court.

The alleged incident happened between September 2018 to January 2019 in Samabula.

Defence lawyer, Jiten Reddy told Magistrate Liyanage Wickramasekara that the accused has informed him about alleged abuse by Police Officers at the Samabula Police Station.

Reddy told the Magistrate that the accused had told Police that the husband had committed the alleged offence but the Police did not investigate the husband.

He told the court that the accused made a complaint against the officers to Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho.

He alleges that after the complaint was made, the two officers harassed, intimidated, pushed, pulled and threw her against the cell wall.

Reddy also informed the court that the medical report suggests a third party was involved.

The case has been transferred to the Suva High Court and will be called on the 12th of next month.
