Flood waters in Labasa town and other areas are now slowly receding, however, police are still closely monitoring the situation as they believe the Labasa river may again burst its banks later today.
Police spokesperson Atunaisa Sokomuri confirmed it has started to rain again in most parts of Labasa and they predict more flooding in the afternoon.
Sokomuri added it is difficult to tell as to how many people and areas have been affected by floods as they lost contact with authorities after phone services went down early this morning.
Meanwhile, in Baiganvanua, a Labasa a family of four is counting their lucky stars after a coconut tree fell on their house following a landslide last night.
Resident Veer Chand Sharma said the family were lucky to escape in the dark as they are now sheltering at their neighbour's house.
Around 15 families had to move to higher ground at around 11 o'clock this morning after flood waters rose again in the Korovatu area.
Resident Dev Kumar who stays on a hill in the area told Fijivillage that from his home, all he can see is miles of water with the nearby temple and the cane fields under some 8 to 10 feet of water.
A resident of Bulileka, Labasa, Bhaskar Tiwari said they are now trying to clean their houses as more than 10 houses were affected by floods in Bulileka last night.
Master Ashok from Wainikoro, Labasa, confirmed flood waters in some areas of Wainikoro has receded while the Wainikoro road is still closed to all traffic.
Ashok added they expect more heavy rain in the afternoon.
Floods Damage Savusavu Homes
Flood waters are slowly receding in most villages along Wailevu West in Savusavu but it has left a lot of damages to houses and farms.
Naiqaqi villager Selai Dileba said flooding entered their village twice from 12pm to 5pm yesterday and again this morning from 3am to 6am with 17 houses affected.
Dileba said most of them were caught by surprise as it was low tide and they did not expect the flood waters to be 5 feet high in most parts of the village.
She added that the neighbouring village of Laucala, Valeni and Naviavia were also flooded but they cannot confirm the number of houses that were affected.
Nadi Residents Prepare For Worst
Flood waters in Nadi town have not risen in the main town and according to Nadi Mayor Timoci Koroqica, people should not relax as rain continues.
He added that the curfew is still on in Nadi town.
However, Nadi businessman Riyaz Ali said people in Nadi are preparing for the worst and are stocking up on essentials to prevent a repeat of last week.
Meanwhile, Namaka resident Asaeli Moce said they are closely monitoring the situation as the heavy downpour continues this morning.
Malawai, Votualevu, resident Maciu Goneva said with the rain continuing, there is a real threat of a repeat of last week's flooding.
Hare Krishna To Provide Meals
As part of its Hare Krishna Food Relief Programme, the Hare Krishna Lautoka Temple will be distributing cooked food to the people in evacuation centres in Nadi, Lautoka and Ba.
Coordinator Dr Rajesh Maharaj told Fijivillage that he spoke to a woman from Ba and was informed that they have been relying on cassava adding that they are targeting areas where the access has been cut off.
Meanwhile, he has also urged people to come forward to make some donations either in cash or in kind.
Rakiraki Experiences Heavy Rain
Flood waters have receded in some parts but people in Rakiraki are still experiencing heavy rain.
A director of Bhima Group of Companies Shiu Nadan said most of the businesses in Rakiraki have been affected since last week.
Meanwhile, another resident of Rakiraki who was on his way from Nadi to Rakiraki has urged people to be careful while travelling towards Rakiraki because half of the road at Yaqara has been washed away.
