The Health Ministry will monitor the Water Authority of Fiji’s task in adjusting the levels of fluoride in reticulated water.
Earlier, Health Minister Doctor Neil Sharma said they are reviewing the country’s water standards and fluoride levels to fight dental issues and other medical problems.
According to Health Ministry’s spokesperson Peni Namotu, Fiji’s national drinking water standard sets 1.0 part per million concentration.
Namotu said according to WHO guidelines for drinking water quality, fluoride levels should not exceed 1.5 part per million concentration in any public water supply.
The Water Authority of Fiji had earlier said that out of the 14 water treatment plants in Fiji, fluoride is added at the Tamavua and Waila Water Treatment Plants.
By next year, the Authority plans to start adding fluoride to the Nagado Treatment Plant which supplies water to Lautoka and Nadi.
