The Ministry of Disaster Management is currently conducting consultation workshops for the review of the Fiji’s National Disaster Management Plan 1995 and Natural Disaster Management Act 1998.

While speaking at the workshop that was conducted today for the private sector and non-government organization, Team Leader for the review Sunia Ratulevu says that in 2000, government recognized the need to review the acts.

Ratulevu says that they will be working with the Office of the Attorney General to draft the Disaster Management Bill and support the Ministry in development of the National Disaster Management Plan.

He says the review process is from April to November.

Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Disaster Management Loata Vakacegu had earlier stated that post Tropical Cyclone Winston it was identified that the Legislation and the plans that the Ministry had in place was put to the test.

Vakacegu had said that it was only until then, that there was an urgent need to review the legislation as it has become a concern as gaps were identified within the legislation.
