The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji says the overloading of vessels has been a major issue and they are monitoring vessels not to exceed the requirement limit.

Enforcement Officer Joseph Walter says with the infringement fine, if a boat is overloaded then either the captain or the vessel owner will be liable to pay the fines.

He says fines are also applied to government vessels.

Police are also working with the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji to prevent crime at the Narain Jetty through the launch of the Muaiwalu Crime Free Board.

Police Director Operation Maritino Qiolevu says crime is not welcome at Muaiwalu and out at sea.

He adds that considering the high number of people and the busy industrial companies that are operating in the area there is a lot on the plate of the Police and they are reaching out to the society to work with them.
