Malaysia and Fiji share more than just strong historical ties – Malaysian High Commissioner

The members of the Malaysian community in Fiji and badminton lovers turned up in numbers to support the Badminton Breakfast Bash Tournament held at the Yat Sen Secondary School hall this morning.

While opening the tournament, Malaysian High Commissioner to Fiji Nor'Azam Mohd Idrus said this tournament is an exciting celebration of communal activities that promote social interaction and a sense of belonging.

He says in both Malaysia and Fiji, nothing beats bonding over delicious food and spirited sports and there is always an appetite for Kokoda and rugby action in Fiji as well as Nasi Lemak and badminton showdowns in Malaysia.

Idrus says through his experience as the High Commissioner to Fiji, as well as during his earlier stint as chargé d'affaires from 2009 to 2014, he has observed that Malaysia and Fiji share more than just strong historical ties.

He adds we are also united by our love for coconut-infused cuisine, and our love for coconuts indeed ties us together even stronger.

The Malaysian High Commissioner says today, as we gather to celebrate badminton, food, and friendship, let's also shine a spotlight on the cultural significance of Malaysian breakfast.

He says their dream is to see it become one of the latest additions to the UNESCO list of cultural practices and expressions of intangible heritage.
