Great Council of Chiefs Review Team member and former President of the Fiji Law Society Graham Leung

Great Council of Chiefs Review Team member and former President of the Fiji Law Society, Graham Leung says making allegations that bringing back the GCC is racist or exclusive, diminishes and unfairly criticises the important role it has played in our historic development.

He highlighted this during the fijivillage Straight Talk with Vijay Narayan when questioned on people saying that bringing back the GCC will be only looking after the interests of the iTaukei, and it is a racist approach.

Leung says he thinks that the criticism is misguided and unfair.

He says the GCC was set up around 1876 to look after the interests of the iTaukei because they were the only inhabitants of Fiji then and the traditional landowners.

He further says the GCC has always been comprised of Chiefs that have been generous, visionary and inclusive.

The former President of the Fiji Law Society adds that it was the GCC that allowed native lands to be leased, and it was a significant decision that allowed the growth of the economy.
