Magistrate tells drug offender that lazy people like him have poisoned Fiji’s youth

A man guilty of drug possession has been told in court that it is lazy people like him who have poisoned our youth.

Magistrate Yogesh Prasad highlighted this to Marika Magita in court as he is charged with unlawful possession of drugs and money suspected to be proceeds of crime.

Magistrate Prasad asked Magita if he had ever been to Saint Giles Hospital, which is filled with young people admitted due to substance abuse involving marijuana and methamphetamine.

He told Magita that he is already receiving a good salary from the Lami Town Council, yet he is still selling marijuana.

Magita informed the court that the money he received from selling marijuana was for his beer, while his salary was for the groceries at home.

Magistrate Prasad told Magita that marijuana has a ripple effect demanding of a custodial sentence.

Magita has been further remanded and will be sentenced on 3rd November.
