Samuela Tawase discharged for compulsory community treatment in Shiv Temple sacrilege case

Samuela Tawase, who was involved in a sacrilege case at the Shiv Temple in Samabula last year, has been discharged by the Suva Magistrates Court for compulsory community treatment.

Magistrate Yogesh Prasad says this is the first case of its kind where such a rehabilitation solution has been ordered.

Acting Superintendent of Saint Giles Hospital, Dr Kiran Gaikwad confirmed that Tawase was not in the right frame of mind when the incident occurred.

Dr Gaikwad says Tawase has schizophrenia and warned that if he returns to illicit drug use, there is a high chance of relapse, aggressive behaviour and the possibility of committing further offences.

He says someone will need to supervise Tawase while he takes his medication and report to the police and hospital if he uses drugs.

Tawase had spent 10 months in remand and three months in hospital.

He has been ordered to take medication every night and receive a monthly injection.

He is also strictly prohibited from consuming illicit drugs, alcohol, suki, cigarettes or vaping.

The court has also ordered regular clinical management as part of his compulsory community treatment.

Dr Gaikwad and Magistrate Prasad acknowledged Tawase's family for their support in his rehabilitation process.
