Krishna Janamaahtami is a celebration to encourage goodwill and togetherness say devotees

As thousands of Hindus gather to celebrate Krishna Janamaahtami or the birth of lord Krishna at midnight, devotees say this is not just the time for celebration but to encourage goodwill and celebrate togetherness which signifies unity and faith.

While speaking to fijivillage News a devotee says this celebration also signifies good conquering over evil and we should all defeat the issues such as drugs from our society.

Other devotees say they have been fasting for almost 10 days to be part of the 8-day prayer session.

They say they have gathered together with their families, cooked prasad (offering), food and sweets to celebrate together the birth of lord Krishna at midnight.

According to the Hindu holy book of Bhagwat Gita, Lord Krishna is the eighth avatar of lord Vishnu, Devaki and Vasudev's son born to destroy the demon King of Mathura, Kansa who was Devaki's brother.

The demon king had captured his sister and her husband and kept them in prison so that he could kill their children after a prophecy proclaimed that the couple's eighth son would cause Kansa's downfall.

Kansa killed off six of their children.

Krishna Janamaahtami is celebrated through the singing of devotional songs, swinging cradle with lord Krishna's idol, dancing joyously, praying and offering food, Prasad and sweets.

Many people also donate and help the needy during this occasion.
