The government is now working on long term alternative water sources.

Minister for Infrastructure Jone Usamate highlighted this in parliament after a statement on water woes in drought stricken areas was made by SODELPA MP Viliame Gavoka.

He says this year they expect to commence works on the Rewa River Water Supply Scheme.

The Minister says they are looking at the construction of a 40 mega-litre water treatment plant, a 10 mega-litre reservoir and the construction of a 26 kilometre pipe line.

He says this Viria Project will address the water needs from the Korovou area to Lami.

Usamate says other areas where works of long term alternative water sources will commence includes Vatutu in Nadi and Buabua in Lautoka.

Viliame Gavoka had highlighted some of areas in his province that experience water supply problems, however Usamate says this government puts the livelihood of it’s people as the most important thing.

Usamate says if there is a need for water to be taken to a particular island, the Ministry will make sure the water gets there.

He says this is part of Rural Water Carting initiative with a budget allocation that increased from $3 million to $6 million.

Usamate says the Rural Water Supply Program covers the provision of safe drinking water to over 133 villages, settlements and health facilities.
