Shiu Dharshan becomes the first patient in Fiji to undergo successful carotid artery repair, avoiding the need for overseas treatment.

A 64-year-old Shiu Dharshan from Valelevu, Nasinu suffered a transient ischemic attack (TIA) a few months ago, the family was devastated.

What seemed like an alarming health incident quickly revealed a far more serious situation. Further investigations showed severe narrowing in his left carotid artery along with major blockages in his coronary arteries. Doctors warned that urgent surgery was critical to saving his life.

For Shiu Dharshan’s family, the news was devastating. In the past, patients in Fiji requiring such complex surgery often had no choice but to travel overseas, typically to India or Australia. The financial burden, stress of travel, and added health risks made the situation even more challenging.

Fortunately, Shiu Dharshan didn’t have to leave Fiji. Thanks to the advanced facilities and expertise at PSH Hospitals, the surgery could be performed locally, providing the family with reassurance and relief.

“We are so thankful that Dad didn’t have to travel far in such a critical condition. “The medical team at PSH Hospitals made everything possible. The nurses and doctors were always there, and Dr Sanjeev Khulbey explained every step of the surgery in detail. It gave us peace of mind and confidence,’’ said Sheetal (Patients Daughter).

Shiu Dharshan successfully underwent a carotid artery repair and off pump coronary artery bypass, and with his steady recovery, his family felt immense relief seeing him regain his strength.

Renowned cardiothoracic and vascular, Dr Sanjeev Khulbey who performed the procedure says;

“This was a challenging case, but with timely diagnosis, careful preparation, and the advanced facilities available at PSH Hospitals, we were able to perform a successful  procedure on carotid artery endarterectomy and carotid artery patch repair with off pump. The patient’s recovery has been very encouraging and demonstrates that world-class surgeries can be safely done here in Fiji.”

“At PSH Hospitals, our goal is to ensure no patient has to leave Fiji for life-saving treatment,” said Mr Parvish Kumar, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of PSH Hospitals. “Every time a family tells us they are relieved not to travel overseas, it reminds us why we started this journey.’’

For PSH Hospitals, Shiu Dharshan’s case marks yet another milestone in their commitment to bringing advanced healthcare closer to home. Today, PSH Hospitals stands as Fiji’s leading super-specialty hospital — a trusted name across the Pacific for delivering cutting-edge treatment with compassion and expertise.
