The Great Council of Chiefs two-day meeting is underway at the redeveloped Vale Ni Bose in Draiba, Suva, where 45 delegates from the 14 provinces, including Rotuma, will deliberate on issues about the iTaukei community.
The Council says the meeting will be the first of its kind in the newly opened complex and also for this year.
It says 6 papers will be deliberated by the Chiefs during the two-day meeting.
The two-day meeting agenda includes the election of the Deputy Chair since the unfortunate passing of the Momo Na Taukei Navo Ratu Meli Saukuru, a discussion on the proposed review of the iTaukei Lands and Fisheries Commission, which would include their organisation structure, legal bindings and the works carried within iTaukei Lands and Fisheries Commission (TLFC), the discussion will also be centred around the Fiji Pine Shareholding, Establishing of Indigenous Natural Resource Trust Fund, the work of the Institute of Language and Culture with other administration matters pertaining to the office of the GCC and there will also be a presentation by the Chair of the Electoral Reform Commission to the GCC delegation.
The Council says that, through the discussions above, its outcomes are expected to benefit the Indigenous communities in terms of their self-sustenance when it comes to economic development.
GCC Chairman Ratu Viliame Seruvakula says the GCC meeting stands as a powerful symbol of unity, tradition, and leadership—an enduring institution that has, for generations, guided Fiji through pivotal moments in its history, reinforcing the strength and identity of the iTaukei people and the nation as a whole.
