GCC chairman urges chiefs to take responsibility for their villagers living on the streets

GCC chairman urges chiefs to take responsibility for their villagers living on the streets

Great Council of Chiefs Chairman Ratu Viliame Seruvakula says what he would like to see is that the chiefs identify their village members who are wandering and begging on our streets and take them home.

In an interview with fijivillage News, Ratu Viliame says if leaders are concerned about the rise in crime and drug abuse in the country today, they should step forward and fill their vacant chiefly titles.

He stressed that this is why it is important to formalise all vacant chiefly titles so that the chiefs can take responsibility for their people.

He says doing so will strengthen iTaukei's leadership in the years to come and help address some of the country's most pressing social issues such as the number of people living on the streets, which has increased.

He further emphasized that if individuals are struggling, the Vanua should support them so they know they are not alone.

The GCC chairman says such gatherings would encourage open discussions about challenges people face and try supporting them in the city or assisting them in returning to their village.
