Four new members appointed to Sugar Research Institute of Fiji Board

Prime Minister and Minister for Sugar Voreqe Bainimarama has appointed four new members to the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji Board.

The new members include Vice Chancellor of USP Professor Rajesh Chandra as Chairman of the Board, a sugarcane research scientist Dr. K.S. Shanmugha Sundaram, Dean of College of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry at FNU Professor Paras Nath, and business owner of Elisha Engineering Ltd, Daniel Elisha.

Bainimarama reaffirmed that Government is committed to bringing in improved varieties, husbandry practices and efficiencies in production, harvesting and transportation of sugarcane to keep the industry viable and sustainable.

He said the appointments were made in accordance with the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji Act of 2005, and are effective for a period of three years from March 1st, 2015.

Bainimarama said putting together the right team of people, where all the stakeholders are represented equates to a more efficient, knowledgeable and well informed group of individuals who will make very important decisions that will help to safeguard the industry.
