Nikola Matawalu receives the man of the match award

The Vodafone Flying Fijians have won the Pacific Nations Cup after defeating Samoa 39-29 in the final a while ago.

Fiji scored a total of five tries from captain Akapusi Qera, Kini Murimurivalu, Nikola Matawalu and two from Leone Nakarawa.

The national side was leading 17-9 at half time.

Fiji showed an improved performance from the last two games as they held their scrum and executing their set pieces well which resulted in tries.

The first two tries was scored by Leone Nakarawa and Nikola Matawalu early in the first 20 minutes.

Fly-half Josh Matavesi then kicked a penalty and two conversions.

Samoa came back strongly in the second half with tries to flanker Jack Lam and two tries to fullback Sinoti Sinoti.

Coach John McKee made a timely change which saw Crusaders bound Ben Volavola injected his skills to the backline with a cross kick to Asaeli Tikoirotuma that led to Leone Nakarawa's second try.

Fiji's fourth try was scored by Kini Murimurivalu which came from a backline move that Volavola was again involved in.

Clermont flanker Peceli Yato also set up a try when he off-load to Nikola Matawalu who ran through the Samoan defence and then passed it to captain Akapusi Qera for the final try.

The Man of the Match award was given to Nikola Matawalu.

Matawalu says they have worked hard to improve from their last game.

In other PNC results, Tonga beat Japan 31‑20 to claim the 3rd position while USA beat Canada 15‑13 to claim the 5th place.

The Flying Fijians will arrive into the country on Thursday to prepare for the Rugby World Cup.
