King of Comedy John Mohammed

Fiji has lost its very own King of Comedy John Mohammed, who passed away on Sunday in California, USA.

Mohammed was popular in Fiji for his jokes which he told both in Hindi and iTaukei.

Navtarang and Radio Sargam Content Director Satya Nand says Mohammed was the first stand up comedian in Fiji who quickly became a sensation.

Nand says Mohammed spent a lot of time visiting rural areas and mingling with the farmers adding during that era people did not have access to television and would listen and laugh at Mohammed’s jokes either over the radio or via cassettes.

He says after observing the lifestyle in the rural areas, Mohammed made cassettes of his comedy which were enjoyed during grog sessions everywhere in Fiji.

Nand says after the release of cassettes, Mohammed did several shows as well where his talent was greatly appreciated.

Nand adds that Mohammed was very versatile and could prepare his stand up comedy with ease.
