The Fiji National Council for Disabled Persons has fully supported the move to ratify the Convention for the Unification of Certain Rules for International Carriage by Air.
While making the presentation today before the Parliamentary Standing Committee, Executive Director, Dr Sitiveni Yanuyanutawa highlighted that there will be positive impacts for persons with disabilities in Fiji who choose to travel by air.
He said there have been unforeseen and unwanted situations like damaged mobility equipment, lost baggage or even to the drastic extent of people losing their lives.
Yanuyanutawa said these challenging situations, even on temporary basis of loss of mobility equipment places disabled passengers at a substantially increased disadvantage in comparison to other passengers who probably have damaged baggage.
He said by ratifying this treaty, it will also assist passengers, both disabled and able-bodied who travel by air for compensation purposes in the event of damage to baggage, death or injury to passengers.
