The government, the Fiji National University, and the International Solar Alliance have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish the Solar Technology Application Resource Centre (STAR-C) at the Fiji National University’s College of Engineering, Science and Technology.

FNU Vice Chancellor, Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba says the centre will serve as a hub for training, research, and capacity building in solar energy, offering services such as equipment testing, knowledge sharing, and entrepreneurial support.

Minister for Metrological Service, Ro Filipe Tuisawau says this initiative marks a milestone in Fiji–India energy cooperation and supports Fiji’s goals of achieving 100 percent renewable energy by 2030 and net zero emissions by 2050.

Ro Filipe says it also highlights the government’s commitment to partnering with academic institutions to address challenges in the solar energy sector, including skills gaps, financing issues, limited stakeholder awareness, and supply chain constraints.

He says STAR-C is expected to produce a new generation of skilled solar energy professionals, ensure quality standards for installations, and empower local communities through upskilling and entrepreneurship.
