Fiji beat New Zealand 12-7 in the Medal Quarter Final this morning.

Fijians are celebrating everywhere in the world after this crucial clash that saw the traditional rivals battle hard for a spot in the semifinal against Japan tomorrow.

Fiji fought hard to qualify for the semifinal as NZ came with its best game so far in the competition in the quarterfinal after losing to Great Britain by 21-19 in the final pool match earlier today.

Fiji captain, Osea Kolinisau led the charge and scored our first try.

NZ kept up the pressure and Gillies Kaka chipped over near the try line to score under the posts.

There was a lot of indecisive play at times by Fiji as NZ continued to move up the field to disrupt play.

NZ led Fiji 7-5 at half time.

Coach, Ben Ryan was fired up at half time and told the players that there is no second chance.

Fiji came back strongly in the second half despite many attempts by NZ to disrupt their game.

Fiji’s wonder boy from Newtown, Jerry Tuwai then made something out of nothing and danced through a number of NZ defenders to score Fiji’s second try.

Osea Kolinisau’s conversion took the score to 12-7.

NZ made numerous attempts to upset Fiji’s play but the Ben Ryan coached side held on to book their place in the first ever Olympic 7s semifinal.

In other quarterfinals, Japan beat France 12-7, Great Britain beat Argentina 5-0 while South Africa thumped Australia 22-5.

The Medal Final will kick off at 10am tomorrow.
