The picturesque setting of Nukulau Island was the perfect backdrop as Fijian designers showcased their culture and heritage at the launch of the 17th Vodafone Fiji Fashion Week.

Fiji Fashion Week’s Temesia Tuicaumia says the show has been a platform for local designers to showcase their creativity, talent, and unique style.

He says as they embark on this new chapter in Fiji Fashion Week's history, they are reminded of the rich cultural heritage that has inspired Fijian designers to push boundaries and create something truly unique.

Tuicaumia says they are proud to be a part of this vibrant community, where fashion is not just about clothing, but about storytelling, self-expression, and connection.

Designers Zulfikar Ali, Hupfeld Hoerder, Tracey Ann Farrington and Sunia Tubuna showcased their culture and heritage in their designs on the island.

FJFW says the show celebrated the launch of Ali’s Aza Studios, a true reflection of his passion for fashion and his commitment to preserving the cultural heritage of his ancestors as it was the Girmits, who first arrived in Fiji and settled on the island of Nukulau, that brought with them the rich traditions and customs of India, which would eventually become an integral part of Fijian culture.

They say as a proud descendant of these early settlers, Ali has been inspired by the vibrant colours, intricate patterns, and ornate designs that have been passed down through generations and his designs are a masterful blend of traditional Indian motifs with modern twists and innovative techniques, resulting in a unique and captivating aesthetic that is sure to delight.

FJFW says Hoarder’s contribution to Fiji’s fashion scene was celebrated as he has not only made a significant impact on the Fijian fashion industry but has also proudly represented the unique culture and heritage of the island of Rotuma.

They say as a Rotuman, Hoarder has been instrumental in showcasing the beauty and diversity of his island's traditions through his designs and his passion for fashion has led him to create stunning pieces that blend modernity with cultural heritage, earning him a reputation as one of the most innovative and talented designers in Fiji.

They also announced that Hoarder will soon be awarded his doctorate in Fashion Design.

FJFW further says that inspired by the beauty of our Kai lomas and Europeans who have made Fiji their home, Farrington’s designs reflect the rich cultural heritage of our island nation.

They say her collection is a testament to the fusion of Eastern and Western styles that has become synonymous with Fijian culture.

They also say that with a deep understanding of the traditional customs and craftsmanship of his ancestors, Sunia Tubuna has successfully bridged the gap between modernity and cultural heritage, creating unique and stunning pieces that reflect the beauty and diversity of Fijian culture.

The Resort Fashion Show will be on Friday, the Resort Luxe Show on Saturday and there will be other events, training and shows for student designers throughout the week.
