Drug overdose crisis: Organ failures and deaths on the rise in Fiji -Kiran

The overdose of drugs amongst people in Fiji has led to kidney failure, other organ failures, and even cases where individuals have gone immediately blind.

Assistant Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran highlighted this during fijivillage Straight Talk With Vijay Narayan as she revealed that there have been reports indicating a significant number of drug overdoses occurring in the country.

Kiran says hospitals would be aware of the causes of death.

She says two individuals were recently buried in Suva, with the church raising concerns, as both deaths were attributed to drug overdoses.

The Assistant Minister says as a nation, the issue has not yet been fully addressed, and there is a lack of public discussion on the matter.

She also highlighted such incidents can deeply affect families and communities, prompting them to say no, and hopefully encouraging more openness towards rehabilitation.

Kiran adds in the past two months, eight known deaths have been related to drug overdoses.

This is only based on the Nadi Market wheelbarrow boys’ account of what is happening to the street kids in Nadi.
