Dog attack victim wants 1983 Dog Act reviewed

There is only a $100 fine for owners of dogs that attack people

Dog attack victim wants 1983 Dog Act reviewed
Adi Narayan.

A man who was viciously attacked by two rottweilers during his morning walk along Ragg Avenue in Namadi Heights is calling for the government to review the penalty for cases where dogs attack people.

Adi Narayan says the two dogs ran out of the compound after the electronic gate was opened by the owner of the house.

He says one of the dogs bit his right calf muscle and the situation would have been worse if he didn’t have an umbrella with him to stop the dogs.

Under the law, if a dog attacks a person, and the owner of the dog is charged and convicted in court, the owner is only getting a $100 fine.

Narayan says if you have a dog, take responsibility and train them because they can attack and kill a person one day.

Narayan says he is getting surgery today.

He says his wound is about 3 centimetres deep and 2 centimetres wide.

Under the Dog Act of 1983, “if any dog on any street, public road or public pathway or in any public place rushes at or attacks any person or any horse, sheep, cattle, pigs, poultry or other animal whereby any person is injured or endangered or any property is injured or endangered, the owner of such dog shall be guilty of an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $100”.
