Natabua High School Principal Virendra Sharma says the growing intensity and inclusivity of the Vodafone Super Deans Rugby Competition is a clear sign that school rugby is thriving, and he credits the media for playing a key role in amplifying the competition’s impact.
Speaking ahead of the quarter finals tomorrow, Sharma acknowledged the importance of media coverage in boosting public interest and competitive spirit, saying, the media plays an extremely important role in intensifying the Deans competition and bringing in the crowds.
He noted a major improvement in the standard of play this year compared to previous years, pointing to the influence of the Fiji Water Flying Fijians’ international performance and the rise of lesser-known schools like Shri Guru Nanak Khalsa, which he described as “very heartening” for rugby in Fiji.
Sharma says this year’s elimination rounds have shown a higher level of competition, and when schools that have struggled financially begin to make their mark, it’s a sign of progress in rugby overall.
He praised the rise of these schools despite limited resources.
Sharma says as a school with relatively strong resources, they are always pleased to see others stepping up, as it only lifts the standard for everyone.
On Natabua’s own preparations, Sharma says the school is focused on learning from past mistakes and stepping up its game to match the strong Southern Zone teams.
Sharma says they fully respect the Southern schools, as they have more teams, experience, as well as game time.
He says, however, Natabua will try to meet the standards of rugby played by the Southern Zone teams head-on.
Natabua’s Under-18 team will face Marist Brothers' High School tomorrow in what Sharma expects to be a “highly competitive” match.
The principal also acknowledged the passionate support from parents, old scholars, and members of the community as a driving force behind the school’s determination.
He says their motivation comes from their multicultural identity and their broad base of supporters across all sectors of society.
He adds that they don’t want to disappoint their supporters tomorrow.
Natabua High School will take on Marist Brothers High School at 3.20pm tomorrow at Churchill Park 1.
In other U18 quarter finals tomorrow, Ratu Kadavulevu School will take on Cuvu College at 12.40pm, Suva Grammar School will take on Lelean Memorial School at 2pm, and QVS will play Nasinu Secondary School at 4.40pm.
All U18 matches will be played at Churchill Park 1.
