Consumer Council wants FRCA to take action
Consumer Council CEO Premila Kumar

The Consumer Council of Fiji is currently working on a number of cases where traders have not adjusted their prices to reflect the VAT reduction from 15 to 9 percent which came into effect on the 1st of this month.

Consumer Council CEO Premila Kumar says these traders are using all kinds of excuses and are not passing on this VAT reduction to the public.

Kumar says they have received a number of complaints from people.

She wants the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority to take action.

Meanwhile, FRCA has issued a stern warning to those traders who are not passing the reduction in VAT to consumers.

Acting CEO Visvanath Das says they are investigating certain retailers who have not decreased prices of goods and services.

Any retailer who does not comply with the new VAT rate will face a penalty of $50,000 or upon conviction to a fine of up to $100,000 or 10 years' imprisonment.
