Consumer Council pleads for collective actions to tackle plastic pollution

The Consumer Council of Fiji is calling on people and businesses to join hands in order to combat the problem of plastics which is plaguing our land and seas.

While speaking at the World Consumer Rights Day celebration, Council CEO Seema Shandil says they have always been fighting for consumer rights and interests but they are now turning their attention to plastics.

Shandil says we use plastic products everyday and it has been engrained into our lives and our consumption and production of plastics, especially single use plastics, have become unsustainable.

Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary for Commerce, Trade and Tourism Shaheen Ali says government has been at the leading position in implementing the ban of manufacturing, sale, supply and distribution of single use plastic bags from 1st January, 2020.

Ali says this is a crucial step towards protecting Fiji's environment, oceans, rivers and wildlife from plastics.
