Consumer Council of Fiji to name supermarkets if they continue with unhygenic practices

Six supermarkets who kept meat that was unsafe for human consumption in their freezers will be named by the Consumer Council of Fiji if they continue to do so.

The Consumer Council found the meat in the freezers of these supermarkets during their inspection after Tropical Cyclone Sarai.

Some supermarkets did not have electricity supply after the cyclone last week which resulted in the meat going bad.

The Council confirms these retailers have sorted internal arrangements for the discarding of the meat, but they are in the process of contacting the relevant municipal councils, Health Inspectors for the disposal of the meat that is still kept in their coolers.

The Council says that if these retailers are once again found to be selling discoloured and defrosted meat, case filing and prosecution will be done by the Ministry of Health Food Unit and the Municipal Councils Health and Legal Departments will co-operate as per the municipal councils and MoH Food Unit standard operation procudure on prosecution of Public Health Offences.
