Constitutional Offices Commission recommends Barbara Malimali as Chair for Electoral Commission and Dr Emberson-Bain as a member

The Constitutional Offices Commission held their meeting yesterday where the members resolved to recommend to the President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, the appointment of Barbara Malimali as Chairperson of the Electoral Commission and Dr Atu Emberson-Bain as a member of the Electoral Commission.

Prime Minister and Chairman of the Constitutional Offices Commission, Sitiveni Rabuka says the members deliberated on the vacancy on the Electoral Commission, pursuant to section 75(7) of the Constitution.

Rabuka says the Commission also resolved that no change be made to the current sitting allowances for the Chair and members of the Electoral Commission and this will be communicated to the Electoral Commission in due course.

The Prime Minister says pursuant to section 136(2) of the Constitution, the Commission has resolved to appoint an independent committee which shall advise the Commission on the appropriate allowance payable to the Acting Supervisor of Elections, Ana Mataiciwa.

He says members of the Commission have been invited to provide their nominations for membership of the independent committee which will be deliberated at the next Commission meeting.

Rabuka says the Commission has resolved that the recruitment process for a new Supervisor of Elections to commence with the advertisement of the vacancy.

He adds that the Commission resolved to appoint a three-member selection panel for the vacancy of the position of Supervisor of Elections and members of the Commission have been invited to provide their nominations for the panel which will be deliberated at the next Commission meeting.
