Permanent Secretary for Health Doctor James Fong.

COVID-19 vaccination for children aged 5 to 11 years old will now begin on Wednesday through the school vaccine program following consent from parents and guardians.

Permanent Secretary for Health Doctor James Fong says their target population is about 150,000 and children in this age category will be given two doses.

Dr Fong says more information on the deployment of the vaccines will be released through an advisory in the next few days.

He says the objective is to ensure they get as much protection as possible for all Fijians over the age of 5.

The Health Ministry received over 7,000 doses of Pfizer vaccines for children last week.

Dr Fong says they have a solid plan in terms of when more doses will be coming in and the Ministry just needs to tag that plan together with their cold chain capability.
