Asthma kills 13 in 7 months

13 people have died from January to July this year due to asthma.

CWM Hospital Intensive Care Unit Head, Dr. Vereniki Raiwalui said last year a total of 25 people died as a result of asthma while this year till the 9th of this month  a total of thirteen people have lost their lives due to asthma attacks.

He said the major cause of deaths is upper respiratory tract infection which is caused by viruses. Also people tend to come in late for proper treatment which has led to some cases being uncontrollable.


Raiwalui said that mostly people between 20 to 70 years are the ones being admitted to intensive care unit and emergency units in CWM Hospital.

Meanwhile around 300 people in the central division have been admitted to hospitals from March to date due to severe asthma attacks.
