DISMAC estimates that around 137,000 people now need relief food assistance with the exception of figures from Northern Division as they start their second phase of assistance in the flood ravaged areas.
Deputy DISMAC Director, Pajiliai Dobui has confirmed that they will now start providing food rations to individual affected families as rations have been delivered to evacuation centers.
Dobui said some areas in Nadi, Nadroga/Navosa, Nadarivatu and parts of Ra are not accessible by road so arrangements are currently being made to airlift these rations.
An estimated, 4000 children in the worst flood affected areas in the Western Division and up in the North are in urgent need of assistance if they are to start school from next week.
Save the Children Fiji Chief Executive Chandar Shekhar confirms that their teams are still carrying out thorough assessments in the Nadi area to obtain confirmed figures on the number of children need assistance in terms of fees, bus fares and lunch.
Shekhar said they will provide a years supply of stationary for the children and will monitor their attendance.
Meanwhile, the Get The Children Back To School Appeal led by the Communications Fiji Limited radio stations, Fijivillage, its sister stations and our website fijivillage.com has raised over $50,000 since it started two days ago.
Appeal Coordinator and Navtarang Programmes Director Satya Nand said only three days remain for people to try and ensure that our children in the flood affected areas are able to Go back to school.
