The National Disaster Management Office in collaboration with the Department of Mineral Resources’ Seismology Unit will be conducting a live test of all the tsunami sirens at 10am next Tuesday.
It says that this test is part of government’s commitment towards improving its state of readiness for any tsunami event and also to ensure that the sirens are in working condition.
NDMO says that the location of the Tsunami sirens that will be tested include, Water Authority of Fiji, Kinoya Sewerage Plant, FINTEL in Vatuwaqa, RFMF Officers Training School in Vatuwaqa, My Suva Park, Government Training Centre in Nasese, USP main campus and USP Statham Campus, i-Taukei Trust Fund Board building rooftop, Civic Car park rooftop, Government Shipping Services in Walu Bay and Lami Town.
It says that the general public will not be required to evacuate adding that it is very important for the public to become familiar with the sound of the tsunami early warning sirens.
They are urging communities and businesses living along the Suva Peninsula to use this exercise to identify and test their evacuation procedures in terms of their designated safe route and safe assembly areas/zones.
