AFL star Nic Naitanui who has links to Fiji has launched his first children's book, titled 'Little Nic's Big Day'.

7 News reports the story was inspired by and dedicated to his mother, Ateca, who helped him learn to love his uniqueness.

The theme of the book is that everyone is different and that should be celebrated and is close to Naitanui's heart.

Naitanui says as a kid he was terrified of school, his hair and skin were different and he was tall and shy.

The book is published by Allen and Unwin and aims to encourage kids to celebrate each other’s diversity.

Naitanui was born in Sydney and plays for the West Coast Eagles in the Australian Football League.
