The Legal Aid Commission will open five more offices in the coming months which will ease access to justice for people.

Commission’s Director Shahin Ali says it is critical that legal services be taken to areas outside the urban centers as they have done in Nabou-walu, Taveuni and Levuka.

Ali says offices will be opened in Rotuma, Seaqaqa, Vunidawa, Keiyasi and Kadavu.

The Commission provides assistance on family law, maintenance, custody, domestic violence and legal representations for offenders who cannot afford a lawyer.

Since 2012, the Commission has opened offices in Nadi, Rakiraki, Sigatoka, Nausori,  Nasinu, Navua, Savusavu, Tavua, Korovou, Levuka and Taveuni .

Meanwhile, Chief Justice Anthony Gates has reiterated that the Legal Aid Commission and its staff fulfil a critical role.

He made the comments while opening the annual Legal Aid Corporate Staff workshop at the Intercontinental Fiji Golf and Spa Resort in Natadola.

Justice Gates acknowledged the important role played by Legal Aid Commission in ensuring access to justice for people who could not afford legal representation among others.
