As Fiji prepares to commemorate Girmit Day tomorrow, a Nepalese scholar is calling for greater recognition of the hidden history and cultural struggles of Nepali descendants in Fiji.

Speaking on the significance of identity, language and migration, Arya Rajan Sharma says while the history of Indian indentured labourers brought to Fiji is widely known, the stories of Nepali migrants remain largely untold.

According to Sharma, many Nepalis travelled to India hoping to escape poverty and secure work, but some later ended up in distant countries like Fiji under difficult circumstances.

He says language barriers and the struggle to adapt caused many Nepali descendants in Fiji to gradually lose fluency in their mother tongue.

Despite this, he shares many families continue to preserve aspects of Nepali culture through traditions, food and celebrations.

Sharma highlights that practices such as making gundruk, preparing local traditional drinks and celebrating Dasai remain important reminders of their heritage.

He also raised concerns that the Nepali government has little awareness of the Nepali-descendant community in Fiji due to the absence of diplomatic representation and limited communication.

Sharma says without proper recognition and unity, the voices and history of Nepali descendants in Fiji risk remaining hidden.

Meanwhile, Multi-Ethnic Affairs Permanent Secretary Dr Vinesh Kumar says performances will also be held and descendants of Girmitiyas in their 80s and 90s will be recognised for preserving the legacy of their ancestors.

Dr Kumar says one of the major highlights this year will be the sealing of a time capsule containing messages that will be opened after 50 years.

He says the commemorations will also include visits to historic Girmit sites including Dilkusha Home and the Nabou Kuti Mandir, which have historical links to the Girmit era.

Girmit Day celebrations will be held tomorrow at the Fiji Museum.
