Emergency water supplies are being delivered to villages, schools and a nursing station in the Yasawa Islands as communities continue to face dry conditions and water shortages due to the impact of El Niño.
The MLC Prestige Sea Link arrived in the Yasawa Islands yesterday to support emergency water supply needs in the Yasawa District.
The operation is being led by the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management through the National Disaster Risk Management Office, in coordination with the Commissioner Western Divisional Office.
Water is being delivered to Nabukeru Village, Ratu Namasi Memorial Primary School, Tamusua Village, Yasawa-i-Rara Village, Yasawa Infant School and the Yasawa Nursing Station.
Nabukeru Village and Ratu Namasi Memorial Primary School are the first locations to receive water before the vessel proceeds to the remaining communities and facilities.
The Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management says the operation is aimed at ensuring communities affected by dry conditions and water shortages receive timely assistance.
The emergency response is being coordinated with the Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport and the Water Authority of Fiji.
