Fuel and gas prices have risen and are now effective

Fuel and gas prices have gone up from this morning.

The price of unleaded fuel has gone up by ten cents from $1.67 to $1.77 per litre, diesel has risen by 15 cents from $1.24 to $1.39, premix has gone up by nine cents to $1.61 and kerosene has increased by 16 cents to $1.16 a litre.

Prices will vary outside the cities in Viti Levu beyond 3 kilometres from any public road.

There are also rises in the prices of LPG and is now effective as well.

A 4.5 kilogram cylinder of gas will cost $11.61 while a 12kg cylinder will cost consumers $30.96.

Auto Gas will go up by one cent to $1.46.

Gas prices will vary outside Viti Levu and Vanua Levu.

The Fiji Commerce Commission has announced the increase based on exchange rates, freight rates and international refined oil prices.

The increase in prices is attributed to increased global demand for fuel, a weakening of the U.S. dollar and supply disruptions in global distribution channels.

Acting Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says unfortunately, global demand for fuel has reached an all‑time high between April and June this year.

He says Fiji is a price taker and cannot control for such fluctuations in global fuel markets.

However Sayed-Khaiyum says even when taking these quarterly increases into account, fuel and LPG prices are markedly lower than prices in this same period last year.
