Following reports from the West that some parents are keeping their children home from school because they are unable to wash their uniforms or bathe, the Ministry of Education says it is working with the Water Authority of Fiji to coordinate water truck deliveries to schools affected by current water supply disruptions in parts of the Western Division.
Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro says the Ministry recognises the challenges the disruptions may pose to schools, students, teachers and school communities.
Radrodro says he has directed the Permanent Secretary to inform all Heads of Schools in affected areas to work closely with their respective District Education Officers to coordinate the transportation and delivery of water to schools where supplies are inadequate or unavailable.
He says any water shortage that threatens essential sanitation, hygiene or the safe operation of a school should be reported immediately so that appropriate action can be facilitated.
The Minister says coordination with relevant authorities is important to ensure assistance is organised effectively and available resources are directed to where they are most urgently required.
He stresses that the health, safety and well-being of students and staff remain a priority, with the Ministry committed to minimising disruptions to teaching and learning during this period.
Radrodro has also thanked school management, teachers, parents and communities for their patience and cooperation as efforts continue to support affected schools.
The Ministry says it will continue to monitor the situation and work with relevant stakeholders to safeguard the welfare of students and teachers.
