The biggest challenge facing the Fiji Navy is sustaining its people and keeping them in the service as more opportunities become available for personnel with specialised skills.
Republic of Fiji Navy Commander, Commodore Timoci Natuva says while the Navy continues to improve its technology and capabilities, its people remain the priority.
Commodore Natuva says recruiting people is easy, but sustaining them is a challenge, particularly in terms of pay and allowances.
He says the Navy is working to ensure its personnel are looked after and their welfare is taken care of.
Commodore Natuva says some personnel have resigned in recent years for opportunities in Australia, New Zealand and the United States.
He says others have moved to agencies and companies in Fiji, including Airports Fiji Limited and shipping companies.
Commodore Natuva says despite improvements in technology and capability, sustaining their people and keeping them in the Navy remains their biggest challenge.
