Minister for Public Works, Ro Filipe Tuisawau highlighted this while speaking at the Polytech Pacific graduation ceremony at Vunimono Hall in Nausori, where 350 students celebrated the successful completion of their technical and vocational education and training programmes.
Ro Filipe congratulated the graduates, their parents and everyone who supported them throughout their educational journey, saying their achievement reflects months of commitment, sacrifice, resilience and determination.
He says the graduates have gained not only nationally recognised qualifications, but also practical skills that will allow them to contribute meaningfully to Fiji’s development.
The Minister says technical and vocational education has become one of the key pillars of national development, particularly as the demand for skilled and qualified workers continues to grow.
He highlighted opportunities in sectors such as infrastructure, construction, renewable energy, climate resilience, tourism, agriculture, manufacturing and information technology.
Ro Filipe says competency-based training is important because it gives students practical confidence and prepares them for the workplace.
He stressed that graduates should not only hold qualifications but should also be work-ready and able to apply their knowledge and skills in real working environments.
The Minister says technology is continuing to evolve, industries are changing and employers are increasingly looking for skilled, adaptable and committed workers.
He encouraged the graduates to continue developing their skills, embrace new technologies and remain open to learning throughout their careers.
Ro Filipe says investing in skills development is important to Fiji’s national development goals under the National Development Plan 2025–2029 and Vision 2050.
He says the Government cannot achieve these goals alone and will continue working with training institutions, employers and industry partners to create more opportunities for technical and vocational graduates.
Ro Filipe also thanked employers for providing students with practical training, work experience, internships and employment pathways.
He encouraged employers to continue supporting graduates as they enter the workforce and begin the next stage of their careers.
The Minister wished the graduates success in their future endeavours and encouraged them to use their skills to help build a stronger and more resilient Fiji.
