Rakiraki fatal accident suspect remains in hospital

The 51-year-old bus driver who allegedly caused a fatal accident in Rakiraki yesterday remains admitted in hospital.

Police say the bus driver veered onto the wrong side of the road at Naqoro and collided head-on with a vehicle driven by a man in his 40s from Ellington, Rakiraki.

The victim was rushed to Rakiraki Hospital, where medical officials confirmed his death.

Police say the passengers travelling in the bus and a 29-year-old woman travelling in the victim’s vehicle were treated and discharged from hospital.

The national road death toll currently stands at 38, compared to 51 for the same period last year.

In a separate serious accident at Namale Junction in Savusavu, a 37-year-old farmer sustained injuries after he was hit by a car driven by a man in his 70s.

Police say the suspect allegedly lost control of his vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and hit the farmer.

The victim remains admitted at Labasa Hospital in stable condition.
