Keir Starmer resigns as UK Prime Minister and Labour Leader
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as both Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party after months of growing pressure from within his party and a series of poor election results.

He will remain in office temporarily until Labour elects a successor.

Starmer says that every decision he made in office was aimed at "putting the country I love first."

He thanked his wife, Victoria, calling her his rock, and said he now wants to focus on being "the best dad" to his children.

The resignation follows weeks of turmoil within Labour, including cabinet resignations, criticism from MPs, and disappointing local election results.

Starmer acknowledged that many Labour MPs no longer believed he was the right person to lead the party into the next general election and said he accepted that judgment "with good grace."

Starmer has asked Labour's governing body to complete the leadership election before Parliament returns in September.

He will continue serving as caretaker Prime Minister until a new leader is chosen.

The leading contender to replace him is Andy Burnham, who recently won the Makerfield by-election and is expected to be sworn in as an MP today.
