The World Sevens Series title race has been blown wide open after the Fiji Airways Men’s National 7s team lost to Kenya 22-19 while South Africa also losing to Scotland 14-12 in their first pool match.

Kenya dominated the breakdown and held on to create the second upset of the day.

They scored three unconverted tries in the first half while Semi Kunatani scored Fiji’s first try to take the scores to 15-7 at halftime.

Captain Jerry Tuwai did not start in this match which saw some uncharacteristic mistakes from the national side.

Kenya extended their lead to 22-7 after Eroni Sau was yellow carded for deliberately knocking the ball off which allows Kenya’s Eric Ombasa to score the match winner.

Fiji tried to come back with two tries to Josua Vakurinabili but the Kenyans held on until the last minute. With this loss, Fiji will need to beat New Zealand in their last pool match at 5.14am to qualify for the quarter finals.

Meanwhile, New Zealand has already qualified for the quarterfinal after defeating Kenya 24-5 and Samoa 22-17.
