FTU raises concerns on a large number of teachers not receiving their correct salaries

The Fiji Teachers Union is raising serious concerns that a large number of teachers have not received their correct salaries.

FTU’s General Secretary Agni Deo Singh says some teachers have been paid as little as $30 to $35 although their correct fortnightly salary is around $600.

Singh says some teachers who have been successful in contacting the Ministry Of Education have been advised that their contracts were not renewed on time which is why there were errors during the data entry of their salaries.

He says they don’t believe this is possible because if salaries are paid and entered then they would be correct salaries.

Singh says there have been consultations with the Ministry regarding contracts and they have been assured for the last two years that contracts would be renewed three months in advance and there would be no stoppage of salaries.

Singh also says that the Human Resources Department of the Ministry of Education has some serious concerns to answer.

The General Secretary also says that the Union also believes that the top leadership of the Human Resources Department of the Ministry does not have officers with understanding of the education background because they do not come from the teaching profession.

We have sent questions to Permanent Secretary for Education Alison Burchell. She is yet to respond.
