Radrodro awaits report as Police investigate alleged student assault

The Education Minister is awaiting the report before commenting on an alleged assault of a 16-year-old Gospel High School student.

Speaking to fijivillage News, Education Minister Aseri Radrodro says he cannot comment on the incident at this stage until a report is furnished to his office.

Radrodro says the Ministry maintains a zero-tolerance position in schools when it comes to the treatment and protection of children.

He says this is clearly stated in the Child Protection in Schools Policy, which details how a student should be cared for at all times.

Radrodro says the Ministry will be in a better position to comment on the matter once the report has been received.

Meanwhile, Police have told fijivillage News that investigations are ongoing, with statements and a medical report obtained.

This follows concerns raised by a mother after her 16-year-old daughter was allegedly slapped by a teacher at the school last Thursday.

The mother, Neeshu Chand, says the incident happened at around 3.30pm on 6th August when her husband went to pick up their daughter from school.

She says her daughter told her father that a teacher had allegedly slapped her on the right side of her face.

According to Chand, her daughter was waiting at her usual pick-up area when a teacher allegedly instructed students to move to another classroom.

Speaking to fijivillage News, Chand says her daughter questioned why she needed to go to the classroom as she was waiting for her father.

She alleges the teacher then slapped her daughter and told her that she had an attitude problem.

Chand further alleges that her daughter asked the teacher for her name, but the teacher refused to identify herself before allegedly grabbing the student by her school uniform and pushing her towards the classroom.
