Four people have lost their lives in two separate road accidents over the past week, and the Land Transport Authority is calling on drivers and pedestrians to take greater responsibility.
LTA says preliminary reports indicate that three people died following a two-vehicle collision at Votualailai in Korolevu last week.
The Authority says the driver of one vehicle allegedly lost control and crossed into the opposite lane before colliding with an oncoming vehicle.
In a separate incident, a pedestrian died after he was allegedly hit by a vehicle while crossing Queens Road at Navo in Nadi.
LTA Acting Chief Executive Officer Makitalena Drova says the loss of lives due to irresponsible driving or pedestrian behaviour remains a serious concern.
Drova says one careless decision on the road can have permanent consequences for families and communities.
She is urging drivers to follow speed limits, avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs, refrain from reckless driving and avoid dangerous overtaking.
Drova is also reminding pedestrians to remain alert when crossing roads and to use designated crossings where available.
She says pedestrians should never assume that an approaching driver has seen them or will be able to stop in time.
Drova says road safety starts with following the rules, being considerate of others and making responsible choices.
LTA says it will continue to carry out daily roadside enforcement and public awareness programmes to encourage compliance with road safety rules.
