Nineteen traditional chiefs from the province of Nadroga/Navosa took the 4FJ Pledge to support the 4 month current ban on collecting, selling and exporting of Kawakawa and Donu.
The chief of Vatulele, the Navunisa, Ratu Joji Toge says the Turaga i Taukei and the Turaga ni Qali along the shores of Nadroga fully support the move by the government to protect these critically important fish during their peak breeding season.
Toge says they are thinking of their responsibility to future generations.
Leveni Drodrolagi who spoke on behalf of the Tui Nadrau says that they used to question why the government had to ban this fish but when they understood the reason for this they wanted to support such an initiative.
The traditional chiefs also pledged to share the message of this message to their individual communities they are living in.
Scot Radaway the founder of cChange, a non‑profit organization that created the 4FJ campaign says they deeply honored for the opportunity to share the campaign with the Turaga I Taukei and Turaga na Qali who have shown their support and commitment.
The ban on Kawakawa and Donu species runs from the 1st of June to the 30th of September.
